- Back in the old days around Kawakawa/Taumarere area the girls were the ones going to school well the boys were in the coal mines working extremely hard.
- Back in Taumarere days they had a made up steam train that could pull 7 tons and it just wasn't enough so they bought two steam boats that could pull 40 tons each threw the Taumarere awa to opua and then drop off the coal at opua warf to the cargo ships.
